The descent from Colle della Lombarda winds through the wilderness of the Sant’Anna ravine until it reaches the capital of the upper Stura Valley, Vinadio: defended by its fortifications that date from the time of Charles Albert, King of Savoy. Just down the valley near Demonte, the long climb up to the 2481 metres above sea level of the Colle dei Morti or Colle Fauniera begins: 22 kilometres among high-altitude prairies and pastures until you reach a wilder, more rugged Alpine environment, a stone’s throw from ‘the Coppi peak’, where a stone statue in memory of Marco Pantani was placed a few years ago: the professional cyclist who died before his time in 2004 and who thrilled his fans with the extraordinary feats he accomplished whilst climbing these slopes.
